VEGETATION OVERHANGING the FOOTWAY AND / OR CARRIAGEWAY
Somerset County Council (SCC) undertakes highway management throughout the County and one of the duties is to maintain highways as a safe environment for all road users.
Grass verge management is carried out by SCC between May – August annually and details are published on the SCC TravelSomerset website.
The SCC South Somerset Area office received in excess of 350 concerns raised by the public relating to overhanging vegetation in 2018 and approximately 16% of those related to land owners and notice had to be served.
You can appreciate that this has an impact on clerk and officer resource where simple maintenance by land owners could be carried out to reduce or remove this issue.
SCC appreciate that growth occurs in bird nesting season, but hedge cutting works can be carried out providing an inspection of the hedge is carried out prior to any cutting works being undertaken. Generally the bird nesting season should be considered to be between late February and August but is dependent on weather conditions.
I hope that you will be able to co-operate to help reduce occurrences and help to protect the safety of the public.
